"Arcana", 1996, oil on canvas, 18"x24"
An exploration into the idea that images can have some power of divination or the ability to point to something beyond themselves (as in the I Ching or Tarot Cards). The calligraphy reads 'life' and 'origin'. Biblical inferences are possible. The number is arbitrary.
"The Lonely Watcher", 2000, oil on canvas, 20"x32"
A recognition of the affinity that some people have for guarding or keeping watch over something that is precious to them, especially if it is to the exclusion of all else. For those, and the pure solitary watch they lead.
"The Obvious Magician", 1998, oil on canvas, 18"x24"
Sculptors are said to be among the few honest artists. What he sells you is really there. Painters try to fool you, some very well. Others have to wave one hand and snap their fingers as they show it to you, muttering how you should ignore the man behind the curtain.
"Dissipative Structures", 2002, oil on canvas, 24"x36"
Inspired by the idea that living organisms are all like waterspouts, dissipative. The structure remains relatively constant while the particles that comprise it move through it, constantly changing its composition. Structures that are dissipative. You and me, same thing. Wait seven years, you'll be someone else.
"The Three Graces", 2000, oil on canvas, 18"x24"
Here the qualities in question are portrayed as ephemeral or insubstantial. The question might also be posed as to the deeper nature of these qualities, beyond what is commonly assumed. For instance, is hope always a grace?
"Specific Examples", 1998, oil on canvas, 30"x36"
An exploration into a pantheistic view of nature and of the scope of consciousness. The scale of the work is meant to be vast and inclusive (small details are rich with significance and represent the whole). The calligraphy reads, "That which is divine".
